REGARDING UPDATING THE CALOOSAHATCHEE MINIMUM FLOW AND LEVEL

A Minimum Flow and Level (MFL) identifies “the point where further withdrawals would cause significant harm to water resources, or ecology, or the area as applicable, pursuant to Sections 373.042 and 373.0421, F.S.” Therefore MFLs directly relate to the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program’s (CHNEP) Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) objectives including HA-E: Meet established minimum flows and levels (MFLs. Establish and meet Estero Bay and major tributary MFLs.”
The stated purpose of the South Florida Water Management District in updating the Caloosahatchee MFL is “to increase the MFL flow criteria at the S-79 structure from 300 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 400 cfs and to revise the duration and return frequency components of the MFL criteria.” The draft rule is available at the South Florida Water Management District’s minimum flows and minimum water levels webpage (https://www.sfwmd.gov/our-work/mfl).
A workshop is planned for February 15, 2018 at 10 am at the South Florida Water Management District, Fort Myers Service Center, 1st Floor Conference Room, 2301 McGregor Boulevard, Fort Myers, FL 33901. This special CHNEP TAC meeting would be open to the to convene and discuss the best available science in preparation for the upcoming workshop.
