Horseshoe Crab Watch

Today CHNEP volunteers attended a Horseshoe Crab Watch training workshop with FWC biologists. Horseshoe crabs can be seen on beaches all over Florida in the fall and spring during high tide events where they come on shore to spawn. Not much is known about horseshoe crab populations in Florida, so scientists rely on reports from local citizens and their help tracking, measuring, weighing, and even tagging these fascinating local animals. Wild about Water Quality in Polk County

The Coastal & Heartland National Estuary Partnership (CHNEP), the Ancient Islands Sierra Club, and EarthEcho hosted a water quality training event in Polk County! Each participant received a test kit to take home to sample their nearest waterway. This is a part of the annual EarthEcho Water Challenge. Samples are needed from local waterways for this global clean water project.

2019 South Florida Initiative to Improve Water Quality

The EPA is calling for applications to fund South Florida Program projects for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Water Quality Protection Program, Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative, Caloosahatchee Estuary, Indian River Lagoon, Florida Bay and Biscayne Bay. The EPA Region 4 anticipates awarding approximately $1,500,000 to $2,000,000 in FY 2019 to fund eight to twelve proposals with funding ranging from $35,000 – up to a maximum of $275,000 per project. The activities to be funded under this announcement will be linked to the EPA’s strategic plan consistent with the EPA’s current priorities for improving aquatic ecosystems, which focus on improving water quality and aquatic ecos
