CHNEP calendars
We live in a beautiful place in the world, and many of you have captured this beauty in your artwork as is evidenced by the calendars produced by Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program since 2005.
Tell us what you think of the CHNEP 2010 calendar by making a short online survey. We appreciate your comments and suggestions to improve the calendar or the process. Your comments well help CHNEP decide whether or not to continue producing these calendars. This survey is anonymous so if you'd like a response, please send an email message to mhilgendorf@swfrpc.org. Thanks.
Do you want to be sure you receive Harbor Happenings and future calendars?
Do you want to submit images for the CHNEP 2011 calendar or select those you would like included?
Donations are appreciated. Many people have asked how they can buy the calendar. With the 2008 calendar, CHNEP began asking for donations to help defray production expenses. Any donations received above the cost of producing the calendar will help with other outreach projects through our wide network of partnerships. If you'd like to help, please send a check made payable to SWFRPC to CHNEP Calendar, 1926 Victoria Ave, Fort Myers FL 33901. (The fiscal agent for the CHNEP is the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council, a 170(c)1. Donations made to SWFRPC are tax deductible as they are exclusively for a public purpose.)
Holidays. Holidays listed in the calendars are limited to those recognized by the federal government and select environmental celebrations. There are several websites that list other holidays, including religious holidays, which you can add as you desire. One such site is Holidays on the Net.
CHNEP calendars are available as PDF files.

You can have your artwork published! Have you captured an image of the beauty found within portions of the seven counties of Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee, Lee, Manatee, Polk and Sarasota that participate in CHNEP with your camera or your paintbrush? The image could have been captured today or 50 years ago in any medium (photography, oil, illustration, etc.). Whether you are young or old, professional or amateur you may submit up to three (3) digitized entries for consideration by the people within the region for inclusion in a 2011 calendar. (The budget to print the 2011 calendar will not be approved until May 2010. Because of the acceptance of these calendars, it is hoped that the budget will be available to produce a 2011calendar.)
Please let others know who you think may be interested in participating. This information will be available as a one-page flier.
1) Submit your entries by July 14, 2010. There is no entry fee and the only "rules" to be considered are:
The image captured must be within the watershed of concern to the CHNEP, which includes all or part of Charlotte, DeSoto, Hardee, Lee, Manatee, Polk and Sarasota counties. Maps of the programs watershed are available on this website.
With the 2010 calendar we will not post images received on the website if the image is obviously not within the CHNEP study area (e.g., Tampa shoreline), features an exotic plant or animal (e.g., Brazilian pepper and Nile monitor lizard) or if the message isn't one that CHNEP wants to encourage (e.g., feeding animals). The person who submitted the images will be notified and may submit other images if they can be received by the deadline of July 14.
Each person may submit up to three images by July 14. Send your entries (on a CD) and completed release forms by mail to CHNEP, ATTN: Maran Hilgendorf, 1926 Victoria Ave, Fort Myers FL 33901-3414.
NEW We hope to be able to accept your entries and entry form through an FTP site. Guidance is not yet finalized.
Images must be received as digital files. If you want help in digitizing your image, contact The Set-Up in Cape Coral (239/542-4142 or info@thesetup.com) or a local commercial printer. Scanning costs are estimated to be $50 an image.
The resolution of the images you submit will determine which of two surveys the image will be in. Those with resolutions high enough to print as an 12 x 9 inch image at 300 dpi will be considered for the 12 x 9 inch feature pages. Images that conform to a 4 x 3 ratio (12 x 9) are preferred as they conform to the anticipated print size of the calendar. Those with resolutions lower than this will be considered as smaller images to appear within the dates of the calendar. (Additional information or "hints" on resolutions is provided below.)
Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form that serves as a release for CHNEP to use the entries in items such as the 2010 calendar, the newsletter Harbor Happenings or on the program website. If images include people who are recognizable, a signed model release form is required of each person. Images will only be posted for selection if a release form is received.
Starting with the 2010 calendar, images will not be posted on the website (see #2 below) if the image is obviously not within the CHNEP study area (e.g., Tampa shoreline), features an exotic plant or animal (e.g., Brazilian pepper and Nile monitor lizard) or if the message isn't one that CHNEP wants to encourage (e.g., feeding animals). The person who submitted the images will be notified and may submit other images if they can be received by the deadline of July 14.
2) Select the images you'd like to see in the 2011 calendar.
During the month of August, we will provide links on this page for you to register to take the online survey by providing a valid email address. If you receive an error message when you follow the link, try again in 10 minutes. This error may occur when the site is being accessed by many people at the same time. You will receive an email message from mvanemmerik@comcast.net with the link to the survey itself. You will only be allowed to enter the survey once so please follow the link when you know which of the 30 images you'd like included in the calendar. The survey will remain open until midnight on August 31.
CHNEP staff will have the final decision on entries posted and printed and will not display images that are obscene, provocative or whose content is otherwise questionable or whose quality does not conform to the standards as specified here. CHNEP retains sole discretion as to what constitutes inappropriate content.

HINTS on digital files: From WiseGeek.com -- The term megapixels is used by digital camera manufacturers to describe the resolution at which the cameras are capable of taking pictures. In most computer contexts, resolution is given as two dimensions, such as in a computer display resolution of 1600 x 1200, which represents a width of 1600 pixels and a height of 1200 pixels. Digital camera manufacturers take the sum total of pixels generated by multiplying the two dimensions, so that a camera capable of producing images at 1600 x 1200 would produce a total of 1,920,000 pixels, or 1.9 megapixels. The website Unlikelymoose.com includes a digital camera conversation chart.
