CHNEP Grants

The Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program (NEP) awards three types of grants. Micro-grant applications are accepted throughout the year but Public Outreach Grants and Research and Restoration Partner Grants are only available once a year. Florida residents, organizations, businesses, government agencies, schools, colleges and universities may apply for grants to support projects that occur within the Program study area.

The Program has awarded outreach, research and restoration projects throughout the greater Charlotte Harbor watershed since 1996. A directory of projects is available of these awards.

1) Micro-Grants are available for up to $250.

2) Guidance for Public Outreach Grants for the next grant cycle (FY08) is available as of November 29, 2007. The process is similar to that followed the last few years; however, the deadline to submit a draft application is September 3, 2008. Final applications are due by noon on September 15, 2008. This is a two-step process and applications will only be considered if applicants have met both deadlines.

Public Outreach Grant Guidance: Outreach projects, which are most often funded as public outreach projects, help multiply the number of people who are aware of the importance of estuaries and the protection of watersheds. Public Outreach Grants provide up to $3,000 with no match requirements. Please follow steps provided in the Public Outreach Grant Guidance Document. The transmittal and budget forms in the packet are available as a Rich Text Format document. The budget to support Public Outreach Grant applications in FY09 (October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2009) is $30,000. The deadline to submit draft applications is September 3, 2008 and to submit final applications is September 15, 2008. Decisions as to which projects will be supported will be made by November 2008. If you have any questions, please contact Maran Hilgendorf at mhilgendorf@swfrpc.org, 239/338-2556 ext 240.

3) Guidance for Research and Restoration Partners Grants for the FY09 grant cycle is not yet available. It is anticipated that the process and schedule will be similar to that followed last year. FY08 grant cycle is available as of August 31, 2007. The process is similar to that followed in past years. The deadline to submit a proposal is October 26, 2007.

Research and Restoration Partners Grants: The research and restoration projects, which are most often funded as research and restoration partner projects, directly benefit the natural resources in the watershed, increase technical knowledge and often include an educational aspect. R&R grants provide up to $20,000 per participating partner and require a 50% match. In FY08 (October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008), $50,000 is available through research and restoration partner partner grants. Please follow steps provided in the Guidance for Research and Restoration Partners Grants. Decisions as to which projects will be supported is typically known in April. If you have any questions, please contact Catherine Corbett at ccorbett@swfrpc.org, 239/338-2556 ext 241.

Please encourage others to apply. Thank you.

If you were awarded a grant and it is time to request reimbursement, please be sure to include a completed and signed Financial Report/Reimbursement Request form in your request. (This form was modified 10/1/07.)

4) CHNEP also provides support to develop public conferences.

The CHNEP is a partnership of citizens, elected officials, resource managers, and commercial and recreational resource users working to improve the ecological integrity of the greater Charlotte Harbor watershed. A cooperative decision-making process is used to address diverse resource management concerns in the 4,700 square mile study area. Four priority problems have been identified in the study area: hydrologic alterations, water quality degradation, and fish and wildlife habitat loss.
